Local programmes

The first Sure Start local programmes were set up in 1999; with a remit to bring together early education, childcare, health and family support for the benefit of young children (under the age of 4) living in disadvantaged areas and their parents. They were an area-based initiative with the aim of improving the health and well-being of families and children from before birth to four, so children are ready to flourish when they go to school.

Of the 524 orginal Sure Start local programmes most are now forming the basis of Sure Start Children's Centres.

These programmes are being evaluated through a national evaluation exercise.
