Children’s Trusts Effective Practice
Children’s Trusts working with Sure Start
Sure Start has worked with four pathfinder Children’s Trusts that are focusing on improving services and outcomes for disabled children and their families to examine effective practice on including disabled children in early years, childcare, play and leisure services. Telford & Wrekin, Nottinghamshire, Gateshead and Sutton Children’s Trusts took part and have produced reports and materials from which other Trusts and local authorities can learn.
Here is a summary of the work they were funded to undertake:
Gateshead Children’s Trust
Agreed to develop a seamless ‘risk management strategy’ for children who require invasive procedures, need to be frequently moved and transferred or display challenging behaviour - and ensure that these children are effectively included in mainstream day care settings. Nottinghamshire Children’s Trust
Agreed to support mainstream providers of childcare, play & leisure services to understand what reasonable adjustments and changes their services can make for the services they provide to be accessible to older children and young people with special needs or disabilities. Sutton Trust for children and Young People
An integrated package of measures to develop good practice models and promote more inclusive services. A holiday activities scheme, out-of-school activities and childcare and social and leisure activities for disabled young people aged 12+ will be targeted. Aim to tackle the entrenched problems of providing adequate, suitable and well-supported services for disabled adolescents. To download full report click here.
Telford & Wrekin Children’s Trust
