July 2005 - Accessibility Planning for early years settings is a new Sure Start funded report from the Council for Disabled Children and the Special Educational Needs Joint Initiative on Training (SENJIT) at the University of London has now been published on this site. The report contains information about services for disabled children that will be useful to individual settings and childminders as well as local authorities. It recommends that a strategic approach to the planning of services, although not a mandatory requirement for private and voluntary sector early years providers, will significantly benefit young disabled children and the settings they attend for their early education and childcare. The report contains useful training materials for staff, including a PowerPoint slide presentation (with trainers notes) that can be e-mailed to early years staff on request.

Jan 2005 - Improving the Life Chances of Disabled People

Nov 2004 - Promoting race equality in early years - This paper has been written for; local authority early years officers; area officers with responsibilities for equality, policy or training issues (in early years and children’s partnerships or local authorities); equality coordinators in early years settings.

Two leaflets about care options for parents of children with a disability or a special need

The department have developed two ‘sign post’ leaflets, the first for parents with children aged 0-11 which contains information, for example:

  • on how to find the right childcare
  • how to pay for additional support and
  • who to turn to for help or advice.

The second is for parents of young people aged 12 plus, which once again sign posts the varied support services available to parents and young people themselves.
