Local activity & targets for smoking cessation

Driving forward smoking cessation policy in Sure Start

A wide range of interventions are being implemented locally through Sure Start to reduce smoking during pregnancy. Activities include:

  • Promoting opportunities for mothers to identify time for themselves, rather than taking a smoking break.
  • Encouraging partners of pregnant women to attend smoking cessation clinics.
  • Providing advice and support to mothers to raise self esteem and to reduce the stressors that make giving up smoking a more difficult task e.g. by providing childcare, financial advice, housing advice, relationship support, and training and personal development opportunities.
