Why do you need Step training?

Taking notesStep in to Learning is a flexible, 12-hour training and development programme for staff in the early years and childcare sector. It equips staff with the knowledge and skills to help them identify parents and carers with a literacy, language and/or numeracy skills need and then encourage and signpost them to appropriate local courses and opportunities to improve their skills.

Step in to Learning recognises the key role early years and childcare practitioners can play as intermediaries and mentors for parents and carers. The programme offers staff innovative ways to engage parents or carers who may not see themselves as potential learners.

The aim is to make it easier for busy parents and carers to improve their literacy, language and/or numeracy skills. The Step approach also enables staff to brush up their own English and maths skills, and supports them in their professional development.

Step in to Learning incorporates a number of key themes from the Government's 2003 Green Paper – Every Child Matters.
