Step in to Learning approach

The Step in to Learning training and development programme aims to give staff who work in the early years and childcare sector the knowledge and skills to help them identify parents and carers with gaps in their literacy, language and/or numeracy skills (also known as “Skills for Life”, or “SfL” for short). The programme equips staff to encourage and signpost these parents and carers to appropriate local courses and opportunities to improve their skills.

The Step in to Learning programme provides information for those early years and childcare staff who would like to brush up their own skills, or obtain a nationally recognised qualification in English or mathematics.

The Step in to Learning approach for parents, carers and staff

Step into Learning recognises the key role that can be played by early years and childcare practitioners as intermediaries and mentors for parents and carers. The programme offers staff innovative ways to engage parents or carers who may not see themselves as potential learners.

The aim is to make it easier for busy parents and carers to improve their literacy, language and/or numeracy skills. The Step approach also enables staff to brush up their own English and maths skills, and supports them in their professional development.
