From April 2007, local authorities will be required to undertake a detailed assessment of the supply of, and demand for, childcare in their area. Local authorities will produce an analysis identifying where childcare supply does not match the needs of families and communities.

2. The National Standards for Children's Centre leaders
These National Standards for Children’s Centre leaders are distinct from but complementary to those recently produced for Early Years Professionals. The Standards apply to all Children’s Centre leaders, whether they are called managers, co-ordinators or directors and whether they are directly responsible for one or more centres. The Standards aim to be both aspirational and inspirational, reflecting the excitement, complexity and challenge of the role of head of centre. They aim to describe the full extent and potential of the role.
