Priorities
The top priority for public funding must be to meet the minimum requirements of the National Standards by securing training for new and existing workers to Levels 2 and 3, and delivering childminder pre-registration courses.
There are many experienced level 3 practitioners in early years, childcare or playwork who:
- may have no relevant qualifications
- may have qualifications that were obtained prior to the Children Act 1989
- whose qualifications are inadequate for their current job role, within the context of the National Standards for Day Care.
That is why we have funded the Early Years and Playwork sectors to develop a qualification that will recognise what such level 3 workers already know and do – The Level 3 Certificate in Work with Children
Other important priorities include:
- Training to meet other requirements of the National Standards, such as first aid training
- Continuous professional development (including training to support the Birth to Three Matters framework, and training to support inclusion)
- Management and leadership training
- Business support, including Investors in People/Investors in Children.
- Basic skills
- Tutor and trainer training
- Training for NVQ assessors and verifiers
